The austere beauty of Never Steady, Never Still reflects the stripped-down lives of Kathleen Hepburn’s self-contained characters, who require little and ask for less. Judy (Shirley Henderson) has early-onset Parkinson’s disease, and only allows herself to express regret and disappointment at a mobility support group.
More mournful than frightening, the ghost story Lavender centers on the loss of family. Jane (Abbie Cornish) remembers nothing about her own parents or siblings, and her disquieting photographs present abandoned farmhouses as haunted relics of a family’s absence.
Director Barnet Bain aims for Milton’s Secret to be a soothing balm for scary times. The film captures the slow release of relief that comforts Milton Adams (William Ainscough) as his 12th birthday nears, and a visit from his grandfather (Donald Sutherland) makes all the difference.
